For me this piece was a portal to the thinly veiled chaos just beneath the surface veneer many people aren’t even aware they’re clinging to. Felt like an intelligent tongue-in-cheek descent into madness.
I especially love how the lack of tongue allows the characters ". . .to meet one another rather than notice each other through linguistic binoculars." you've definitely left me thinking about the ways we can interact with language when barred from orthodox methods such as uniform speech.
I’ve been thinking about it a lot too, it’s scary and freeing at once to think about how easy it would be for us to return to our pre-linguistic selves
It’s always been fascinating to me how much language helps us connect and how hard it must be to have physical limits that constrain that. Your piece captured that very well.
Also, I enjoyed your non-fiction foray. It’s interesting to see how you play with that format. :)
I didn’t realize how much I ache-missed your crisis pieces until now! Thanks for the sidetrack home on your way to the next stop. And 2. Likewise I can’t believe you composed that Master Class in mouth sounds!! I’d love to see the notations if they’re still in existence?? Was it performed just as animated or as uncannily still as those contortions can allow?
Haha thanks for checking it out, Katie! Oh yeah the performance was just as animated. That vocalist is an absolute treat. I can send over some images from the score if you’d like
That piece was both interestingand tacticle. I found mysel trying to speak without using my tongue and was immediately reduced to vocal gutterals. That poor man.

Thanks, E.T.! It’s very easy to forget how easily we could descend into the pre-lingual

That was my assumption! And YES! Please please DM me??
Blowin my mind here man. Also, that song, you composed that? How???
Thanks, Sean! haha oh boy…I had to invent a new type of notation and find a singer willing to do crazy shit
"I poke my tongue around my mouth, letting it roam—it’s not something I think about often."
I was doing just that while reading your piece. All your words made sense to me.
A free-range tongue can be a healthy thing.

It is so difficult. I was inspired by his spirits though! Very positive fella for sure
Thanks for reading, Tom!
